The EPS fish box mold market has a problem that most buyers discover too late: the quality difference between a good mold and a bad one does not show up on delivery day. It shows up three months later, when drainage channels start retaining water. Or six months later, when the surface coating degrades and parts stick. Or a year later, when dimensional drift puts your box lids out of spec.

By then, your original mold supplier may be uncontactable, or the cost of returning the mold for repairs is prohibitive.

Here are the seven questions to ask any EPS fish box mold supplier before you place an order.

First: what surface coating do they apply, and what is the coating thickness? PTFE (Teflon) coating at 30–50 μm is the standard for food-contact applications. Thinner coatings degrade faster under steam cycling. Some suppliers use cheaper alternatives that are not FDA-compliant. Ask for the coating spec in writing.

Second: do they provide a DFM report before machining starts? A proper DFM review for a fish box mold covers drainage channel geometry, lid-to-body mating tolerances, surface roughness specifications, and shrinkage compensation. If your supplier skips this step, you are taking on the risk of a design problem that only surfaces in production.
